All cameras and DVRs are not created equal. Many on-line merchants are conducting “bait and switch” tactics designed to generate quick sales with advertised low prices on high end cameras, but then shipping out low end cameras that do not meet advertised specifications. Look for a direct phone number and street address on the “contact us” page of the web site. Call and ensure that there is a corporate telephone system in place, make sure that more than one person works there, and that anyone you speak with can supply you with their telephone extension number. And just as importantly, make sure that the company is just as interested in supporting their products as they are with selling them.
Just like all cars are not the same under the hood, even if they appear to have a similar body style, all video surveillance products are not equal. It is unfortunate, but many disreputable merchants buy knock-off cameras that are designed to look like the real thing, but have inferior components. Without taking it apart, it can be very hard to spot the fakes. Many merchants will advertise these knock off cameras to be high resolution or possess Sony chipsets, but in fact they do not. A good rule of thumb, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
